My Yorkshire: Nell McAndrew
Nell McAndrew, 34, was born in Leeds and worked briefly as a clerk
for the Yorkshire Bank before embarking on a modelling career which has brought her international fame.
In 1996, she became the official model for the character of Lara Croft in the video game, Tomb Raider, and later became the first British woman to appear on the cover of the American Playboy magazine. She now presents a series of best-selling fitness DVDs while working as a TV presenter, and through her running is a tireless fund-raiser for charities like the British Heart Foundation, Breast Cancer Awareness and Help the Aged. Nell was voted Yorkshire Woman of the Year in 2003. She and her partner, Paul Hardcastle, have a two-year-old son, Devon.
What is your first memory of being outdoors in Yorkshire?
We used to go on day trips to Filey, Bridlington and Scarborough because we couldn’t afford to go abroad. It usually rained, but we enjoyed it all the same.
What’s your favourite part of the county, and why?
Leeds. I was born and brought up in the city, so no matter where I have lived or worked, I always look forward to going back there, especially to see my family.
What is your idea of a perfect weekend/day out in Yorkshire?
Lightwater Valley or Flamingo Land are places I can remember being taken to when I was younger, and I am looking forward to taking my little boy very soon. There’s so much to do for children of
all ages. They really are great fun family days out.
Do you have a favourite walk or view?
Anywhere in the Yorkshire Dales. There are such amazing views, and I have always found them a great place to de-stress.
Which Yorkshire sportsman/woman would you take for lunch?
Darren Gough. I met him recently and he was a good laugh. We were working on a game show and had to wear silver, skin-tight cat-suits. He was asking if he could keep it, but I don’t think I would like him to turn up for lunch wearing it.
Which Yorkshire stage or screen star would you like to take for lunch?
Well, actually, Paul Hudson’s the man for me! He’s the only weatherman who makes me smile.
If you had to name your Yorkshire hidden gem, what would it be?
Robin Hood’s Bay. I remember having great fun there on a school trip.It poured down, but we still enjoyed it.
What do you think gives Yorkshire its unique identity?
The Yorkshire accent, and also the down-to-earth attitude of Yorkshire people.
What about Yorkshire’s cultural life?
Forget about the arts, Rugby League’s the thing for me. It’s a real favourite, especially with my dad.
Do you have a favourite restaurant or pub?
Yes, the New Inn, at Sawood, Halifax. They do a great Sunday roast and always give me an extra Yorkshire pudding. My favourite café is Bubble and Squeak, at Lindley, Huddersfield. They do great coffees, as well as delicious home-made food and cakes.
Do you have a favourite shop?
Sports Shoes Unlimited in Bradford. It’s where I always go to get measured up and kitted out for running trainers.
How do you think Yorkshire has changed in the time you’ve known it?
The county’s much more cosmopolitan now, especially Leeds, and there are lots more visitors to Yorkshire in general.
How has Yorkshire influenced your work?
I feel I am honest and down to earth with a good work ethic, which are true Yorkshire qualities. A no-nonsense, no-fuss-needed type of approach.
Who is the Yorkshire man or woman you most admire?
Jane Tomlinson. I feel very privileged to have met Jane and her family and to be part of Jane’s ongoing legacy, the Leeds 10k Run for All. Jane did so much to help others and Jane’s Appeal will continue to do so for many years to come.
Name your favourite Yorkshire author.
Kay Mellor. A very talented, successful, hard-working Yorkshire woman to be admired.
Do you have a favourite Yorkshire singer?
I think that Corinne Bailey Rae is extremely talented. I love the sound of her voice, she’s got great style and she is beautiful, too. An original artist who will be successful for a long time. It’s always nice to see Yorkshire people doing well, it makes me feel proud.

Thousands finish Great North Run
Tens of thousands of people have completed the 28th annual Great North Run on Tyneside.
A record 52,000 runners were set on their way when former prime minister Tony Blair and three Beijing gold medallists sounded starting hooters.
Some 30,000 spectators lined the route, between Newcastle and South Shields, to cheer on the participants.
This year’s half-marathon runners are raising an estimated £10m for local and national charities.
Mr Blair was joined by Olympic swimmer Rebecca Adlington, Olympic cyclist Chris Hoy and Paralympian swimmer Ellie Simmons.
Celebrity runners
The former prime minister congratulated race founder Brendan Foster on making the event a success.
He said: “Brendan has done the most amazing job and the Great North Run is now one of the big events worldwide.
“There are thousands of people running and I think they are going to raise about £10m for charity, which is utterly incredible.”
Celebrity runners included model Nell McAndrew, Apprentice winner Lee McQueen and former champion jockey Richard Dunwoody.
Ethiopia’s Gete Wami claimed victory in the elite women’s race as Britain’s Jo Pavey finished in third place.
Tsegay Kebede made it a double triumph for Ethiopia as he won the men’s race with a dominant display.
